The Canadian government’s support through the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) is coming to an end this April. This rebate was designed to help Canadians deal with rising costs caused by the federal carbon tax. For years, it has provided relief to households, especially in areas where carbon pricing was applied.
The program has gone through changes over the years, including a name change from the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP) to the Canada Carbon Rebate. One big update came in 2024 when the rural supplement was increased to offer more money to people in smaller or remote communities. But with the end of federal fuel charges, the rebate will also stop.
The last CCR payment is scheduled for April 23, 2025. Eligible individuals must file their 2024 tax returns on time to receive this final payment. After this, no more quarterly payments will be issued. It’s important for Canadians to check if they qualify and follow all steps to make sure they don’t miss out.
What Is the Canada Carbon Rebate?
The Canada Carbon Rebate is a tax-free payment provided by the federal government. It helps people handle the extra costs that come from carbon pricing. The program supports individuals and families with a base payment and an extra amount for those in rural or small towns.
The rebate was first introduced in 2018 as the Climate Action Incentive and later changed to CAIP from 2021 to 2023. In 2024, it became the Canada Carbon Rebate, with the rural supplement raised to 20% of the base amount.
When Will the Last Payment Be Made?
The final Canada Carbon Rebate will be issued starting April 22, 2025. This is because the carbon pricing system and the CCR program are ending on March 15, 2025.
To get this last payment, people must file their 2024 tax return electronically by April , 2025. Filing after this date could delay your payment since it will only be sent once the tax return is processed completely.
How Much Will You Get from the CCR?
The payment amount depends on your location, family size, and if you live in a rural area. Everyone gets a base amount, and people in rural areas get an extra 20% . Prince Edward Island includes the rural amount in the base payment.
Which Provinces Are Included?
The rebate is only available in provinces where the federal carbon tax applies. These include:
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Nova Scotia
- Ontario
- Prince Edward Island
- Saskatchewan
Residents of British Columbia, Quebec, and the territories (Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories) are not eligible because those places use their own carbon pricing programs.
