General Motors (GM) has agreed to a major $35 million settlement to end a class action lawsuit involving certain diesel trucks. These vehicles reportedly had faulty fuel pumps that caused serious damage and costly repairs for many customers. The fuel pump issue affected specific Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra diesel models sold in seven U.S. states.
The main problem was linked to fuel injection pumps that could fail and send metal pieces into the truck’s fuel system. This often led to engine breakdowns and repairs that cost thousands of dollars. Owners accused GM of knowing about the defect but not properly informing customers or covering the costs of repair.
Although GM has not admitted to any wrongdoing, it agreed to the settlement to avoid a long court case. The settlement offers reimbursements, extended warranties, and cash payments to both current and former truck owners. If you owned one of the affected models, you might qualify for a payout—so it’s important to know the eligibility rules and how to file a claim.
What Was Wrong with the Trucks?
The lawsuit said that GM diesel trucks from model years 2011 to 2016 had faulty Bosch-made fuel injection pumps. These pumps would break down over time and send metal debris through the fuel lines. This could block fuel injectors, damage the engine, and in many cases, lead to complete engine failure.
Some truck owners said repairs cost more than $10,000. Because of the high cost and lack of coverage in some cases, many people took legal action against GM. The case claimed GM sold the trucks even though it knew about the fuel pump defect.
Who Can Receive Money or Benefits?
You may be eligible for a payment or repair help if you bought or leased one of the affected trucks under specific conditions. The vehicle must meet all of the following:
- Be a 2011 to 2016 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra diesel truck
- Purchased or leased from a GM-authorized dealership
- Sold in one of these states: California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, or Texas
- Bought between March 1, 2010, and September 13, 2024
People who meet these rules may receive cash payments, repair cost refunds, or extra warranty coverage. A special VIN check tool is available to confirm if your truck qualifies.
What Kind of Payments or Support Can You Get?
For Past Repairs
If you already paid for fuel pump repairs out of pocket, you might be reimbursed. The refund amount will range from $6,356 to $12,712, depending on how much you spent and how many people file claims.
For Future Repairs
GM will offer an extra 12-month warranty for eligible trucks. This extended coverage will pay for half of repair costs, as long as the truck has under 200,000 miles at the time of repair. You could get up to $5,000 in repair help.
For Former Owners
If you used to own one of the affected trucks but sold it, you may still get cash between $400 and $800, based on how long you owned it and how many people file claims.
